Gel to confine and securethe elimination of fluids
Gelling of certain potentially at-risk liquids (biological fluids, contaminated or not, containing chemical or cytotoxic substances) constitute a pertinent prerequisite before disposal of these substances.
Gelling liquids or body fluids has 3 advantages:
Makes disposal safe
The spill of some liquids can cause splashing, thereby contaminating the environment (e.g. when draining diuresis at 24h without a bedpan washer; case of containers with cytotoxic effluents).
Reduces costs
Since putting infectious biomedical waste in liquid waste drums can be expensive, the gelling of liquid waste would seem to be a more economical alternative.
Facilitates cleaning
In fact, it is always easier to clean a surface soiled by liquids once they have gelled in the form of clusters.
